A good CV is an essential tool for anybody searching for employment as nearly all advertised vacancies will ask for a CV. It represents the first stage of the recruitment process and gives you an opportunity to present yourself to prospective employers in the best possible light.
When writing an effective CV, you need to consider the vacancies that you are applying for, and give consideration to what the employer is looking for. This will improve your chances of securing an interview.
The Perfect CV There is no perfect CV or a set way to prepare one. It is a personal document and so each one will be different. There is, however, certain information which must always be included. This includes:
- Your Full Name
- Personal Details
- Date of Birth, Marital Status, etc. - Contact Details
- Full Address
- Telephone numbers (Home & Mobile, including area codes)
- Email Address - Personal Statement/Summary
- A brief introduction to your skills and experience - Education & Qualifications
- Highest or most relevant qualifications first - Training
- Professional Membership of relevant institutions
- Employment History
- Chronological order with most recent first
- Include Company names, your position and dates of employment
- A detailed but brief description of your duties and responsibilities, include specific projects and any achievements
- Your current position should be written in the present tense and previous positions in the past tense - Interests
- A brief description of any hobbies or interest
- This could be included in the personal statement/summary
- Keep it brief as employers are more interested in your work experience - Referees
- It is not essential to provide contact details of referees at this stage, but you should be able to provide these details if requested
Things to Remember - Ideally your CV should not be longer than 2 pages, 3 at the most
- This means keeping it brief and to the point
- Think about the layout, make sure it’s easy to read and looks professional
- Use bold points to highlight different sections of the CV
- Do not use gimmicks or fancy designs, keep it professional
- Remember to read it through and spell check the final draft
- Put yourself in the position of the employer reading it, what would they think?
- Make sure it’s sent to the right person and that they have received it!
